Abstract

In this paper I will explore endogenous sources of innovation and local identity as one of its defining elements. The concept of local identity has been researched by geography and social sciences since the 1960s. Local identity as a potential area of endogenous development is often discussed in literature on the topic. Most of these emphasize that deep patriotism can be a driving force in regional development since strong local identity can enhance the participation of residents. (Schmied 1987 cited Borner 2005).
Endogenous development strategies can be effective in eliminating the shortcomings of regional development policy. As opposed to exogenous development strategies they take into account the needs and capacities of the region, since decisions on the development of the region are made locally. (Maier – Tödtling 1996 cited Borner 2005). Regional inequalities can be tackled successfully with local economy development, as necessary measures are taken locally. „Local economy development means conscious intervention in processes of local economy with the aim of improving living conditions for local communities.” (Bajmóczy 2011, p. 13.)
