Abstract

This paper contrasts neoliberal ideas rooted in democratic principles and fundamentalist ideas arising from subjective beliefs in terms of the legitimacy of state power. The political ideologies of the 20th century have all revealed their shortcomings. Today’s market-oriented capitalist systems are organized based on the ideology of the neoliberal market economy and globalism, although their weaknesses are evident. The European Union urgently needs not only ideological but also functional strengthening. Social problems such as migration issues or the situation of minorities are still to be solved and could be managed more effectively by concerted efforts. This would require the development of a new political culture that could deepen democracy and also maintain the traditional values of identity, equality, freedom and solidarity. A deliberative and consensus-building dialogue alongside liberal principles could provide a response to emerging social tensions.
