Promoting Charity and Social Sustainability in the Church’s Legal and Institutional System

Abstract

The Catholic Church has been a more prominent advocate of social sustainability in comparison to other global political and national actors. Indeed, promoting social justice and peace is a pervasive theme within all Catholic institutions. The ecclesiastical legislature, following the Council’s intentions, has established ecclesiastical institutions from the initial stage to be capable of promoting social justice. In recent times, dioceses, episcopal conferences, parishes, and local communities have become significant contributors to major public policy goals, including the preservation of the natural environment, the promotion of peace, and the establishment of regional security. The study emphasises that the centralised support provided by the offices of the Pope and the Holy See is both practical and deeply theological in nature. The study hypothesises that the Catholic Church will play a central role in understanding and implementing social sustainability soon due to its possession of both the theological doctrine and the institutional framework.
