Educational Problems of Subcarpathian Hungarian Minority

Abstract

My research explores the opportunities, motivations and options of Subcarpathian graduating students in the matter of their further studies. The research was carried out on the basis of questionnaires filled in by those students who are already studying at higher education institutions. I aimed to elaborate on the difficulties a student has to face when he or she is a member of a national minority group and strives for knowledge and self-realization. Based on the results of the questionnaires I am going to reveal the current problems of Hungarian language education in Subcarpathia, as well as touching upon the previous studies of this topic.
I performed this case study in order to find out the opinion of the college students in my close environment (students living in the Saint Gerard Catholic Dormitory in Uzhgorod) on the current educational system. I tried to emphasize the importance and reveal the difficulties of the education of national minorities in their native language based on their point of view.
The results of the the questionnaires prove that everybody, including education experts are aware of the problems; they are constantly discussed in oral and written form, well elaborated educational plans are developed but nothing has changed.
