Abstract
In this study, we look at the eighteenth-century libraries of the princely branch of the Hungarian Batthyány family extending into the nineteenth century. By reviewing the book culture of several generations, we can see traces of characteristic cultural phenomena such as the dominance of French culture, the increasing importance of books on practical knowledge, the prominence of fiction (belles-lettres), the role of female readers and the long-term trend towards secularisation. On the other hand, we can also see traces of special relationships with literary materials. We have information about the books from former catalogues and other related documents, and some of the volumes are still available today in contemporary collections. Becoming more familiar with the libraries is an important step in understanding the historical role of this outstanding family.
