Abstract
The prologue to the Estoire del Saint Graal (1230–1235) - the first part of the Lancelot-Grail Cycle - is a unique example of a threshold text employing the cliché of translatio: the anonymous scribe of the Estoire presents his book as a transcription of another book, written and transmitted to him by Christ himself. This method, developed within a detailed temporal framework of the Easter, allows for more than just backing up the text of the Estoire with the authority of its divine creator. Between God, his book and the text occurs a translatio substaniae, a series of incarnations which endows the romance with the character of a new Holy Scripture.
