Une université d’été s’est tenue à Budapest en août 2024, consacrée aux communautés de la lecture¹, concept élaboré par Stanley Fish en 1980 dans son ouvrage Quand lire, c’est faire. L’autorité des communautés interprétatives². Cette conception s’appuie sur la thèse selon laquelle ce sont les lecteurs qui font les livres, et que leur interprétation dépend de la communauté à laquelle ils appartiennent.

Le présent numéro spécial de VERBUM rassemble des études et des réflexions qui, à travers différentes époques, communautés et œuvres littéraires, ne se limitent pas à l’analyse des textes ou à la question de leur interprétation, mais examinent également leur contexte théorique et social, ainsi que la pluralité de leurs lectures possibles.

The aim of this analysis is to describe how certain factors played a major role in strengthening the communal identity of the Breton language in Lower Brittany. On the one hand, through the transmission of ecclesiastical Breton literature and certain orthographic reforms of the language by P. Maunoir and Le Gonidec, which led to the emergence of a Breton folklore and nationalist movement. On the other hand, the implementation of a linguistic policy for the use of Breton in various aspects of everyday life.

From the 17th century onwards, the actors’ physical movements on stage were reflected in a constant struggle and exchange of glances, with the eyes as the main means of transmission. They thus became active characters in the play, really dramatic individuals. In this sense, this study aims to evaluate the importance of the lexeme yeux in classical French theatre, particularly in Cornelian plays, where this term frequently recurs and even becomes a main character in its own right. Statistical linguistics research was carried out on all the plays written by Corneille in order to study this aspect. This made it possible to create graphs for analysing the lexeme yeux and other terms linked to the lexicon of sight.

La (re)lecture écopoétique de l’Œuvre de Maurice Genevoix

We analyze the work of the French writer Maurice Genevoix (1880–1980) and we don’t only approach the First World War as a starting point in all of his work, but in the same way we establish the dichotomy between what represented the conflict of war and the inherent presence of nature as a concrete and symbolic reality. We base the methodology developed by the researcher Pierre Schoentjes about the ecopoetic dimension. We want to highlight that this unmissable author received the Goncourt prize in 1925: he was also a French academician and his prestige found new momentum from November 11, 2020 thanks to the ceremony of his pantheonization in France. This significant fact undoubtedly pushes us to reread his work, symbol of a war literature (lived and written on the front line); we have to admit that he was a great precursor of the ecopoetic movement: the environmental literature currently in vogue within the French-speaking literary world.

Certain literatures of the Americas have been misinterpreted. Due to this misunderstanding, notions such as magical realism and Southern Gothic are today anchored in the collective imagination of a large part of the reading public, whether specialist or amateur. Is it possible to question these interpretations despite their consecration and popularity? This work explains why it is necessary. Existing labels and other alternatives to describe the region’s literature will be studied using a comparative and decolonial approach. This paper will both reaffirm the different realities of the Americas and suggests a new way of qualifying these literatures with greater accuracy and justice: multitransrealism.

The question of moral and cultural relativism is not only one of the fundamental academic problems but also one of our everyday lives. However, during the twentieth century, ethics was relegated to the realm of art, especially by analytic philosophy, represented in the interwar period by the so-called Vienna Circle. However, using the example of the post-analytic philosopher Richard Rorty and his concept of sentimental stories which aim to increase our capacity for empathy, it seems that art can contribute to a tolerant and respectful human community. Although the types of perception of these stories may vary, according to Maryane Wolf’s conclusions supported by neurocognitive science, it is reading, specifically deep-reading, that can affect our capacity for empathy. In other words, literature can change the world and perhaps, therefore, free us from the grip of cultural relativism.
