Qu’il s’agisse de la crise du climat ou de celle du coronavirus, la nature s’impose avec véhémence dans la sphère humaine. Les rapports de l’homme à la nature sont constamment remis en évidence, parfois dans une attitude de respect réciproque, parfois selon des intérêts personnels dominants. Soit, dans une vision dynamique, l’homme observe la nature, la contemple, la transforme, voire l’exploite ; soit, s’y intégrant selon une perception statique jusqu’à s’y confondre, l’individu renonce à son rôle de pilote pour s’y isoler selon les fibres de repli de son instinct conservateur. Face à ce dilemme, les questionnements sont multiples de la philosophie, de l’éthique, de la politique, de l’écologie, etc.

Du paysage du naturaliste à la beauté du paysage

The paper aims to study the evolution of the representation of nature in travel literature between the 18th and 19th centuries. It seems that the representation of nature constitutes a novelty in the 18th century. The first group of texts, that of the naturalists, can inform us about a new interpretation of the notion of nature as well as about the possible ways of writing nature in the 18th century. For this reason, we will first study some excerpts from Voyages dans les Alpes by Horace Bénédict de Saussure. He is exalted in front of intact nature, a true scientific object. The second part of the presentation will be devoted to the presentation of the various aspects of nature in the accounts of the trips made in Hungary during the years 1830–1840. In general, for travellers, unspoiled (or messy) nature depreciates while the cultural landscape (tamed nature) is enhanced.

During the 19th century, the flood was the natural disaster most often represented in pictures due to its greater visibility or its spectacular character. Thus, disasters occur in various discursive genres, such as in prints, in the press or in literary texts. The ecopoetic approach that we will adopt in this study will allow us to rethink our relationship to nature in such a way as to emphasize questions of form and writing to present nature through the prism of ecological problems including the disturbed relationship between human and non-human in natural, urban or industrial environments. It is in this spirit that we will propose to study here the questions of writing in various genres of discourse of the 19th century, relating to natural disasters, in particular in prints, short stories and naturalist novels.

This article proposes an ecosophical approach to the work of Marie Darrieussecq in a context circumscribed by the philosophical works of Gilles Deleuze, Félix Guattari, Baptiste Morizot, Bruno Latour, D. J. Haraway, and then gives a reading of the cover text for Nicolas Guiraud’s photo album, Anthropocène (2017), drawing on Emanuele Coccia’s concept of landscape. In the light of the ecological context outlined, Darrieussecq’s programme of making a world out of what disintegrates takes on a collective dimension where to fabulate is to remain in (social, mental, environmental) disorder. For inhabiting the disorder does not happen without becoming-with, without daring to go out and garden one’s forest, one’s biotope – as a sow, as a clone, as a writer, but always taking up the pen to write before it is too late…

Le retour à la nature à travers le sacrifice

Pasolini’s resumption of the ancient myth of Medea aims to understand where we have come from and to alert us to the dangers of what has been lost. In fact, Medea was released in the time of the miracolo economico, during which a big part of the Italian landscape was completely disfigured by uncontrolled industrial development. At the same time, the legalisation of abortion and divorce – two subjects against which Pasolini always took a reactionary stance – were also beginning to be discussed in Italy. Life, in these new profane societies, risks being as useless as it is empty. Hence Pasolini’s provocation: what if Medea’s sacrifice of her children, instead of responding to a vengeful crisis, reveals in fact an act of supreme love reaffirming a secret, but also more natural, equality between life and death?

La perception sensible de l’eau – la poétique du mouvement et de l’infini

Through an analysis of literary examples from the turn of the 18th and 19th centuries (in particular those of Jean-Jacques Rousseau and François René de Chateaubriand), the paper proposes to reflect on the nature of water as an aesthetic element, in the strict sense of the term, which separates and connects and makes it possible to perceive space in the text. The aim is to show that analysis of the poetic use of the image of water, which is somewhat conventional and stereotyped, helps us understand the transition between two spatio-temporal visions, that of the Enlightenment and that of the Romantics.

Maurice Carême, poète du végétal

In the interpretation of Maurice Carême’s (1899–1978) poetry, nature is often emphasized as a distinct source of his poetic creation. The poet’s work is deeply rooted in nature, especially in the Brabant landscape; this region, its nature, and vegetation are somewhat the ones that shape and influence his thinking. In our reevaluation, we will highlight Maurice Carême’s particular focus on plant life. A rich vocabulary of plant species characterizes this work, evidence of the beauty of the natural world. The botanical aesthetics of this poetry and the paradigms that dominate it are the subjects of our inquiry: the presence of botanical poetic imagery in Carême’s poetry; the inclination toward merging with plant life; and the significance of the form and dynamics of plant life as a model for creation.
