Abstract
The syntax of quantification is often considered a field for semantics, however, in this paper I consider some phenomena arising in the syntax of quantity expressions in old Italian. The comparison with modern Italian and other previousy studied languages, supports the proposal that Universal Grammar provides various syntactic categories to express quantification in argument position, among which nouns (N), adjectives (A) and a specialized category that I name quantifiers (Q).
